I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: a night at a mountain hut is my favorite way to experience the Swiss Alps.
This page gathers every Swiss mountain hut hike I've written about in detail, organized into single-overnight trips and multi-day hut-to-hut treks. It's not a definitive "best of" list — just the ones I've documented so far, though I can honestly say I loved every single one. Each links to a full post with route details, personal impressions, and plenty of photos.
Single-Overnight Hut Hikes
One day up, one night in a hut, one day down. It’s what we locals do on summer weekends (and why huts are always so busy on Saturday nights!).
Capanna Cristallina — Ticino
My very first hut - and the hike that introduced me to the absolute grandeur of the Ticinese Alps. Stages 2 and 3 of the Sentiero Cristallina lead past a string of alpine lakes — with ibex and chamois if you're lucky — to a modern hut perched right on the Passo di Cristallina. Challenging but never technical, with cable cars at both ends: a perfect first hut hike.
Terrihütte (Greina Plateau)— Graubünden/Ticino
The Greina Plateau is a vast high-altitude tundra on the border of Graubünden and Ticino, and photos simply don't do it justice. The Terrihütte, a stone hut perched at the meeting point of three valleys, is one of the most beautifully situated huts I've stayed at in Switzerland. Bonus points for the suspension bridge and for starting your hike in one canton and finishing in another.
Geltenhütte — Bernese Oberland
A hut surrounded by waterfalls, in the quiet corner of the Bernese Oberland between Gstaad and Lenk. The hike in from Lauenensee is short but spectacular, the staff is some of the friendliest I've encountered, and day two rewards you with a swim in the impossibly blue Iffigsee. A great choice for families and beginner hut hikers.
Hüfihütte — Uri
Tucked at the very back of the Maderanertal — one of the prettiest valleys in Switzerland — the Hüfi Hut makes you earn it: no gondolas, no shortcuts, no cell service, just a steep 1,500-meter climb through a wild valley of waterfalls. The reward is a cozy "klein aber fein" hut sitting right next to the Hüfi glacier. (And the best yogurt of your life at Alp Stössi on the way up.)
Capanna Nimi — Ticino
A cluster of traditional stone houses on a plateau overlooking Lago Maggiore, Capanna Nimi is a family-run farm with a herd of over 60 friendly goats — and staying there is an experience I don't want to spoil with too many details. The climb up from Maggia is a classic Ticino leg-burner (1,400 meters, many, many stone steps), but the 5pm apéro alone is worth every step.
Capanna del Forno — Graubünden
Perched above the Forno glacier right on the Italian border, this is one of my favorite hut weekends to date. Two very different approaches from Maloja — a dramatic high trail and a gentler valley trail — combine into a perfect loop, with the pretty Lägh da Cavloc as a built-in lunch stop.
Rugghubel Hut - Obwalden
This hut does it all! It can be an easy overnight for beginners, with a simple 1.5 hour hike from the Risti chairlift above Engelberg. Or, you can start at St. Jakob in Uri for a long mountainous crossing. Either way, I recommend combining this with the Walenpfad hike on day 2! (Full post coming soon)
Multi-Day Hut-to-Hut Treks
These treks string together multiple hut nights for full immersion in the high mountains.
Alpine Passes Trek — Valais
Five days, four hut nights, and six mountain passes through the Valais Alps, from Arolla to Mauvoisin. Glaciers, ibex, the mighty Grand Combin, and views that somehow got better every single day. I don't say this lightly: this might be one of the best multi-day hikes in Switzerland.
Tour des Muverans — Vaud/Valais
A four-day loop around the Grand Muveran massif on the Vaud–Valais border, and still far quieter than famous routes like the Haute Route or Tour du Mont Blanc. With multiple trailheads, huts, and variants, it's endlessly customizable — our version included the dramatic Bellacrete cliff traverse and a night at Cabane Fenestral with its famous floor-to-ceiling windows.
The Kesch Trek — Graubünden
A true alpine trek between the Flüela and Albula passes: four days entirely above the villages, with no roads or chairlifts in sight. It was once described to us as a "Goldilocks" trek — each stage just the right length and challenge — and after hiking it twice, I fully agree. Raw, rocky, remote, and wonderful.
